The central theme was “energy” – the inequality of its distribution and consumption as well as the demands on the future. Energy should be produced more sustainably in the future and used more sparingly. Children in particular should be educated about this, and improve and implement their knowledge and skills with their own practical experiences.

The SolarCup was organized as a regional competition for the first time in Berlin. Pupils constructed their models in advance in workshops at their schools. With professional guidance from the “New Hope and Light Team”, they built basic models and then designed them according to their own ideas. From small caravans to sailing boats on wheels, vehicles powered by solar energy were built. The children’s enthusiasm and creativity resulted in an impressive variety of models.

Germaine Flaure Ngamou, Executive Director of New Hope and Light, was thrilled with the results: “This is one of the best projects we have chosen to teach children about renewable energy. We helped them create a science project to test an aspect of renewable energy, which piqued their interest. A hands-on approach always helps in retaining the information.”
