Junior Solarcup Berlin 2022 – Wettrennen auf dem Tempelhofer Feld

On June 29, 2022, students gathered at Tempelhofer Feld to participate in a race with self-built electric cars organized by New Hope and Light e.V. The central theme was “energy” — addressing the inequality in its distribution and consumption, as well as future requirements. The goal is to produce energy more sustainably and use it more efficiently. Children, in particular, are intended to be educated on this matter, improving and implementing their knowledge and skills through practical experiences.

Children are building their future.

The SolarCup was organized for the first time in Berlin as a regional competition. Students constructed their models in advance during workshops at their schools. With professional guidance from the “New Hope and Light Team,” they built basic models and then customized them according to their own visions and ideas. From small caravans to wheeled sailing boats, solar-powered vehicles of various designs were created. The enthusiasm and creativity of the children resulted in an impressive variety of models.

Fair Competition of Visionaries

The participants gathered at 9 a.m. at Tempelhofer Feld near the community gardens on Oderstraße. First, all models were inspected to ensure they complied with the rules. Subsequently, each group presented their poster and model. The children designed posters and prepared a presentation.

Afterwards, the groups raced their models against each other. In an exciting competition, the electric cars engaged in an incredible race.

The electric cars are charged at a solar charging station.

The winners of the competition

The team “Sussy Bakas” secured the third place, and the second place went to the boys from “Tesla on Wish” of the Sophie-Scholl-Schule.

The proud winners of the competition were the group “Totenkopf-R” from the Karl Weise Schule.

  • 3rd Place: “Sussy Bakas”
  • 2nd Place: “Tesla on Wish”
  • 1st Place: “Totenkopf-R”

Germaine Flaure Ngamou, Managing Director of the New Hope and Light association, expressed enthusiasm for the results: “This is one of the best projects we have chosen to teach children about renewable energy. We helped them create a scientific project to test an aspect of renewable energy, which has sparked their interest. A hands-on approach always helps in retaining information.”
